Common Mistakes in Subject-Verb Agreement

When learning English grammar, one of the most common mistakes students make is with Subject-Verb Agreement. The subject and verb must always agree in number. This means if the subject is singular, the verb must be singular, and if the subject is plural, the verb must be plural.

Rule 1: A singular subject takes a singular verb. 

(નિયમ 1: એકવચન વિષય માટે એકવચન ક્રિયાપદ આવે છે.)

1: He runs every morning.

     તે દરરોજ દોડે છે.

2: She likes ice cream.

     તેને આઇસ્ક્રીમ ગમે છે.

3: The dog barks loudly.

     કૂતરો જોરથી ભસે છે.

Common Mistake: (સામાન્ય ભૂલ:)

Incorrect: He run every morning.

Correct: He runs every morning.

Rule 2: A plural subject takes a plural verb. 

(નિયમ 2: બહુવચન વિષય માટે બહુવચન ક્રિયાપદ આવે છે.)

1: They play football on Sundays.

     તેઓ રવિવારે ફૂટબોલ રમે છે.

2: The birds fly in the sky.

    પક્ષીઓ આકાશમાં ઊડે છે.

3: The students study hard for exams.

     વિદ્યાર્થી પરીક્ષા માટે જોરથી અભ્યાસ કરે છે.

Common Mistake: (સામાન્ય ભૂલ:)

Incorrect: They plays football on Sundays.

Correct: They play football on Sundays.

Rule 3: When the subject is separated by words like "along with," "as well as," or "together with," the verb agrees with the first subject. 

(નિયમ 3: જ્યારે કર્તા 'along with,' 'as well as,' અથવા 'together with' જેવા શબ્દોથી અલગ થાય છે, ત્યારે ક્રિયાપદ પ્રથમ કર્તા સાથે સહમત હોય છે.)

1: The teacher, along with the students, is going on a trip.

   શિક્ષક, વિદ્યાર્થીઓ સાથે, પ્રવાસે જઇ રહ્યા છે.

2: The book, as well as the notes, is on the table.

    પુસ્તક, તેમજ નોંધો, મેજ પર છે.

3: My brother, together with his friends, is playing football.

   મારો ભાઇ, તેના મિત્રો સાથે, ફૂટબોલ રમી રહ્યો છે.

Common Mistake: (સામાન્ય ભૂલ:)

Incorrect: The teacher, along with the students, are going on a trip.

Correct: The teacher, along with the students, is going on a trip.

Rule 4: Collective nouns (like team, family, group) usually take singular verbs. 

(નિયમ 4: સંઘવાચક નામો (જેમ કે team, family, group) સામાન્ય રીતે એકવચન ક્રિયાપદ લે છે.)

1: The team wins the match.

    ટીમ મેચ જીતે છે.

2: The family gathers for dinner every night.

    પરિવાર દરરોજ રાત્રે ભોજન માટે ભેગો થાય છે.

3: The group decides on a project.

     સમૂહ પ્રોજેક્ટ પર નિર્ણય લે છે.

Common Mistake: (સામાન્ય ભૂલ:)

Incorrect: The team win the match.

Correct: The team wins the match.

Rule 5: Words like "none," "everyone," "each," and "everybody" take singular verbs. 

(નિયમ 5: "none," "everyone," "each," અને "everybody" જેવા શબ્દો એકવચન ક્રિયાપદ લે છે.)

1: Everyone is invited to the party.

     દરેકને પાર્ટીમાં આમંત્રિત કરવામાં આવ્યા છે.

2: Each student gets a prize.

     દરેક વિદ્યાર્થીને ઇનામ મળે છે.

3: Nobody knows the answer.

    કોઈને જવાબ  ખબર નથી .

Common Mistake: (સામાન્ય ભૂલ:)

Incorrect: Everyone are invited to the party.

Correct: Everyone is invited to the party.
